"Ashura Exhibition"
"阿修羅展"
I went to see Ashura Exhibition on June 7th because it was the last day.
Maybe I have seen Ashura once but I don't really remember what it looked like. So this is kind of my first time to see it.
As soon as I saw it, my eyes remained glued to the position of its hands praying in front of its body.
It was not in the center.
It was out of the center line to the right.
I was very interested in this position
As far as I remember, Ashura is totally symmetric. But it's not like that.
And I found that the other two pairs of arms were also a bit asymmetric.
What is the intention of this position??
I think it could be totally symmetric if the sculptor wanted to.
Considering the position of front two arms, I can say that the length of each arms is different.
That is the essence of Ashura I guess.
When we glance at Ashura from its front, it seems to have three pairs of two arms. But I think these six arms are not pairs. Each arms correspond different let's say mentality. And these six arms (different mentalities) try to make Ashura sublime Buddha by trying to configure "symmetric form". But it can't be totally symmetric and it's a bit asymmetric.
Looking at the face of Ashura, I think it seems to be a face of human who has a problem in the mind rather than Buddha that is totally divine.
Human being also have some different feelings and characters in the mind and discipline ourselves in public or in society.
So Ashura represent conflicts and incompletenesses that human being have by pretending to be a statue of Buddha I guess.
だいぶ前ですが、6/7の日曜日に最終日ということで阿修羅展を観に行きました。阿修羅はおそらく一度見たことがあると思うのですが、あまり記憶が鮮明でないので、ある意味今回が初めてといった感じです。
阿修羅を見た瞬間目がいったのは、合掌しているその位置です。
微妙に中心からずれているんです。
こっちから見て右側に。
これがすごく気になりました。
僕の記憶というか先入観では、阿修羅は綺麗なシンメトリーなはずです。
そしてよくよく見ると、他の二組の腕も微妙にアシンメトリーなわけです。
これは一体どのような意図があるのでしょうか？
シンメトリーに作ろうと思えばピシッと合わせられたはずです。
合掌の二本の腕で考えると、当たり前ですが合わさっている二本の腕の長さが異なる、ということになるでしょう。
僕はここに阿修羅の本質を見ました。
要は、真正面からパッと見ると、三組の腕がある。という風に見える訳ですが、そうではなく、全く異なる六本の腕（この六本の腕は別々の人格ということでしょう。）がそれぞれ、仏像に相応しい荘厳さを醸し出すために、シンメトリーっぽいポーズを作っている。だが完全にシンメトリーにはなりきれず、そこに微妙なずれが生じてしまっている。
阿修羅の顔を見ても、仏様というより何かに悩んでいる人間に近いように思えます。
人間も生きていく上では、様々な感情や人格を内に秘めており、人前や社会の中ではこの阿修羅像のように（必死に）自分自身を律しているわけです。
阿修羅は仏像という形式の中に、人間がもつ葛藤や不完全さをそこに表しているのだと僕は思いました。
