"Ashura Exhibition"

I went to see Ashura Exhibition on June 7th because it was the last day.

Maybe I have seen Ashura once but I don't really remember what it looked like. So this is kind of my first time to see it.

As soon as I saw it, my eyes remained glued to the position of its hands praying in front of its body.

It was not in the center.

It was out of the center line to the right.

I was very interested in this position

As far as I remember, Ashura is totally symmetric. But it's not like that.

And I found that the other two pairs of arms were also a bit asymmetric.

What is the intention of this position??

I think it could be totally symmetric if the sculptor wanted to.

Considering the position of front two arms, I can say that the length of each arms is different.

That is the essence of Ashura I guess.

When we glance at Ashura from its front, it seems to have three pairs of two arms. But I think these six arms are not pairs. Each arms correspond different let's say mentality. And these six arms (different mentalities) try to make Ashura sublime Buddha by trying to configure "symmetric form". But it can't be totally symmetric and it's a bit asymmetric.

Looking at the face of Ashura, I think it seems to be a face of human who has a problem in the mind rather than Buddha that is totally divine.

Human being also have some different feelings and characters in the mind and discipline ourselves in public  or in society.

So Ashura represent conflicts and incompletenesses that human being have by pretending to be a statue of Buddha I guess.

A black suit of COMME des GARCONS

"A black suit of COMME des GARCONS"

I bought a black suit of COMME des GARCONS at 10 corso como COMME des GARCONS in Aoyama.

I regard shopping as investment to myself and at the same time to a brand or a company. (But of course I sometimes buy on impulse.)

I hope 10 corso como COMME des GARCONS in Aoyama gonna be cutting edge place like  the 10 corso como in Milan that has  it's own gallery and cafe as well.

Actually one of my dreams is to make this kind of space in Tokyo.

By the way a suit of COMME des GARCONS that I bought is fresh reminder of the power of clothes.

A clothes that really suits with my sense changes my feeling a lot.

This wonderful feeling is close to the one that I feel when I see art pieces.

Clothes can let us wear the feeling. I think which is really fantastic.

"Tokyo Story"

Director : Yasujiro Ozu

I mentioned a camera work that was similar to Yasujiro Ozu's style seen in "Hito no sex wo warauna" last but one.

But I was wondering why the director (of "Hito no sex wo warauna") used it.

Because I think it should be used with a link between the effect and what the director want to describe in the movie.

So I watched "Tokyo Story" directed by Yasujiro Ozu in order to know his intention and reason why he used it originally.

When I finished watching it, I thought he didn't make a big scene at all.

The story is very simple. Grandparents living in Onomich visit their son living in Tokyo. That's all.

All the scenes consist of what everyone has already experienced. About very usual scene.

So...  in the case of no story in a movie, which point should we pay attention to??

"camera work"

I think how he shoot the movie may give us an answer.

In the movie, there seem to be two prominent types of the camera work. One shoots certain composition from a bit far point of view with stable camera and the other one shoots only a face and an upper body of an actor.

The former one is what I explained last but one and I analyzed it and found two effects that are ingenerated by it.

1.To ingenerate a sense of reality as if we were also in the scene.

2.To ingenerate a sense of tension between stable composition and unstable acting, distant view and close view.

These effects help to let us pay attention to "other than a story".

I suppose "other than a story" is a behavior or feeling of actors. He focuses on basic humanity.

All generation (children, parents, grandparents) appear in the movie and  he shot a conflict between children and parents, parents and grandparents with stable camera.

By watching the scenes we can feel as if we were there and observed what human tend to behave and feel in normal life.

What he wanted to describe by shooting a movie gives a reason to this camera work.

His intention is to describe humanity.

"Haruki Murakami / 1Q84"

A new full-length novel written by Haruki Murakami was out a couple of days ago. The last one called "Kafka on the Shore" was out seven years ago.

Though I only read the first chapter, I was thrilled with his way of writing that contained realistic and unrealistic depiction at the same time.

Where is his imagination gonna take us next??

I'll read it with appreciation.

"Hito no sex wo warauna"

Director : Nami Iguchi

Original author : Naokora Yamazaki

Cast : Hiromi Nagasaku, Kenichi Matuyama, Yu Aoi

The combination of Maison Martin Margiela and Yasuko Hashimoto reminds me of a movie called "Hito no sex wo warauna".

It means "don't laugh at other's sex".

Hiromi Nagasaku has a pouch of Maison Martin Margiela and it's not really obvious.

I saw this movie because I wanted to see her fashion styling but the camera work that the director used was more interesting for me.

It can be seen a lot of times in this movie and I think it seems to be Yasujiro Ozu's style.(He is one of the best Japanese movie director.)

Or I can say that it's like Gus Van Sant's style as well.

The camera doesn't move at all for long time and it cuts certain composition from the scene and casts act in this composition.

The effect of this camera work is to make "needlessness" in the movie.

What the casts say and behave have kind of function that conveys its story and what they feel to those who see it.

Due to that, if the director shoots only the line and behavior that are needed to describe how the story is going, there is no room for interpretation.

There is a scene where a huge rice field was shot for a long time (maybe 15 seconds) with stable camera and suddenly a bus that main actress took appeared from the edge of the screen.

And there is also a scene where a corridor was shot  with stable camera and an actor looked for his teacher.

These scenes could be described "functionally" only by two seconds each I guess.

By this "needlessness", those who see it can feel as if they were in the scene and contrasts between stable composition and unstable acting, distant view and close view.

These contrasts ingenerate kind of a feeling of tension.

That's what I felt from this camera work.

Check it out.
